Two Important Things Moms of Teenagers Should Know

If the way you’re parenting your teenager isn’t working, here are two important things you need to know:
Number 1 — Your relationship can change because you can change.
I know you’re exhausted, stressed and out of ideas about how to get through to that kid. And sometimes you go from zero to full-on yelling/ controlling/ pleading/ panicking in two seconds flat. It happens to all of us.
You need to know that that impulse, whether it’s blaming, fixing, begging, lecturing, criticizing, threatening, shouting or sobbing, doesn’t have to last your whole lifetime. It’s not just ‘who you are’ or ‘the cards you were dealt’. It’s an automated reaction that was set up by your internal systems to protect and guide you temporarily.
If that auto-reaction is taking over your parenting and causing more distance than connection between you and your teenager, then it’s time for that to end.
Number 2 — You can’t think your way out of it.
You want to feel grounded and composed when you respond to them, say what you really mean and be really supportive. Of course you do. But the answers about how you can approach your teenager differently aren’t going to come from more thinking.
You’ve already spent hours and hours contemplating and agonizing over how to stop exploding in anger or collapsing into fear. You’ve already asked yourself a thousand times how to stay in the tense situations instead of shutting it down. You’ve already set up so many different plans and tactics, and the problem hasn’t gone away.
That’s because the wisdom for parenting this kid has to come from a deeper place in you.
My upcoming workshop, “How to Stay Calm When Your Teenager Isn’t”, will take you to that deeper place.
In carefully crafted exercises, we’ll drop down and explore the auto-reaction you’ve been experiencing. I’ll shine a light on aspects you probably haven’t seen before, and help you develop your own personal tool for interrupting that impulse.
There won’t be any cookie-cutter scripts or surface-level strategies in this hour. This is about tapping into your inner knowing — body, heart and soul.
And with that wisdom, you’ll set a course for approaching those previously divisive situations in a way that’s calm, effective, and aligned with your true heart.
